Like many rare diseases there are facets of erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) which have never been fully characterised, explained or understood. One area of research that has created an ongoing dialogue in the peer-review literature and at conferences is the impact of pregnancy on EPP patients. It has been reported that many women experienced reduced phototoxicity during pregnancy, but this is inconsistent and not well explained.
A UK case report published this month reports on one such case resulting in a healthy birth (full text available for purchase here).
For a broader view of the topic, two cohort studies have been published, one each from Sweden and Denmark.
